The Legend's Origins
This dramatic print captures a pivotal moment in the early life of Oniwakamaru, who would later become the legendary warrior-monk Musashibō Benkei. Born under extraordinary circumstances—remaining in his mother's womb for eighteen months and emerging three times the size of a normal infant—Oniwakamaru's destiny for greatness was apparent from the start.

The Supernatural Challenge
The scene depicts young Oniwakamaru at Mount Hiei, where he was sent to study at the Enryaku-ji Temple. News had spread of a monstrous carp, measuring eight feet in length, terrorizing women and children in the temple's pond at Yokawa. This supernatural creature had been causing havoc in the sacred waters, challenging the peace of the religious community.
The Moment of Confrontation
Yoshitoshi masterfully captures the tension as Oniwakamaru prepares to confront the demon carp. The young warrior is shown poised at the water's edge, concealing a dagger, his expression revealing unwavering determination. This moment precedes what would become a fierce underwater battle, demonstrating the extraordinary courage that would later make him one of Japan's most celebrated warrior-monks.
Historical Context
This tale represents one of the earliest demonstrations of Benkei's legendary strength and bravery. While historical records debate the actual existence of Benkei, his tales—including this early feat—became integral to Japanese folklore, particularly his later famous association with Minamoto no Yoshitsune (formerly known as Ushiwakamaru).
Artistic Interpretation
Yoshitoshi's composition brilliantly conveys both the supernatural elements of the tale and the raw courage of youth. The artist captures Oniwakamaru's fearless determination as he prepares to leap into the pond, armed only with a small dagger against a formidable supernatural opponent.
